The boxes are unpacked, the furniture is in place, and the moving truck has pulled away. Now what? Moving to San Jose is an exciting milestone, but the work doesn’t stop on move-in day. There’s a whole list of practical tasks to take care of in the first few days and weeks to make sure you’re fully settled, legally covered, and ready to make the most of your new city. Our San Jose movers have helped thousands of people relocate to Silicon Valley, and this is the post-move checklist we wish everyone had on hand.

First 48 Hours: The Essentials

Before anything else, take care of the basics that affect your daily comfort and safety.

Do a full walkthrough of your new home. Check every room, appliance, window, lock, and light fixture. Document any existing damage with photos and report it to your landlord or property manager right away. If you purchased the home, note anything that needs immediate attention before it becomes a bigger repair.

Locate your utility shutoffs. Know where the water main, gas valve, and electrical panel are. This is basic safety knowledge every homeowner and renter should have from day one.

Set up your essential utilities. If you haven’t already arranged for electricity, gas, water, and internet to be active, do it immediately. In San Jose, PG&E handles electricity and gas. Contact them at pge.com or call to transfer service into your name. For internet, AT&T and Comcast/Xfinity are the primary providers in most San Jose neighborhoods.

Change your locks. Whether you’re renting or buying, it’s smart practice to rekey or replace the locks when you move in. You have no way of knowing how many copies of the previous keys exist.

Introduce yourself to your neighbors. San Jose neighborhoods vary a lot in feel and community culture. A quick introduction goes a long way and can be genuinely useful for learning the unwritten rules of the block.

Within the First Week: Legal and Administrative Tasks

Once the immediate settling-in is done, shift your focus to the paperwork and registrations that keep you legally covered in your new city.

Update Your Driver’s License and Vehicle Registration

If you moved to San Jose from out of state, California law requires you to get a California driver’s license within 10 days of establishing residency. You’ll also need to register your vehicle with the California DMV within 20 days. Visit dmv.ca.gov to book an appointment at the nearest DMV office, as walk-in wait times can be long.

Update Your Address

Notify the following as soon as possible:

  • US Postal Service via usps.com (forward mail from your old address)
  • Your bank and credit card providers
  • Your employer’s HR department for payroll and tax records
  • The IRS and California Franchise Tax Board
  • Your health insurance provider
  • Subscription services, Amazon, and any recurring deliveries
  • Your auto and renters or homeowners insurance

California makes voter registration straightforward. You can register online at registertovote.ca.gov using your new San Jose address. If you’re already registered in another county or state, you’ll need to re-register at your new address.

Update Your Car Insurance

Your insurance rates are tied to your zip code, and San Jose rates can differ significantly from where you moved from. Contact your provider to update your address and review your coverage. California has specific minimum coverage requirements, so confirm your policy meets them.

Within the First Month: Getting Established

With the urgent tasks out of the way, the first month is about putting down real roots in San Jose.

Find a Primary Care Doctor and Dentist

Don’t wait until you’re sick to find a doctor. Use your insurance provider’s directory or Zocdoc to find in-network physicians near your neighborhood. San Jose has excellent healthcare infrastructure, including regional hospitals like Valley Medical Center and Good Samaritan Hospital, but primary care appointments can book out several weeks in advance.

Set Up Your San Jose Waste and Recycling

San Jose has one of the more detailed recycling and composting programs in California, managed through GreenWaste and Recology. Make sure you know your pickup days and understand the three-bin system: trash, recycling, and organics. Putting the wrong items in the wrong bin can result in a missed pickup or a fine.

Get a San Jose Public Library Card

The San Jose Public Library system is extensive and underrated. A free library card gives you access to digital resources, free museum passes through the Culture Pass program, and community events. It’s a genuinely useful tool for new residents getting to know the city.

Learn Your Neighborhood’s Parking Rules

Parking regulations in San Jose vary by neighborhood and street. Some areas have permit-only zones, street sweeping restrictions, and overnight parking rules that are actively enforced. Check the signs on your block carefully and look up whether your neighborhood requires a residential parking permit through the City of San Jose’s website.

Explore Your Neighborhood on Foot

Get off the freeway and actually walk your neighborhood. Find the closest grocery store, the best coffee spot, the nearest park. Understanding the walkable radius around your home makes everyday life easier and helps you feel like a resident rather than a visitor. If you’re still figuring out which area suits you best, our guide to the best neighborhoods in San Jose for families, young professionals, and retirees can help you get a feel for what each part of the city offers.

If You Have Kids: School Enrollment

San Jose falls within several school districts depending on your specific address, including San Jose Unified, East Side Union, and Campbell Union among others. Each district has its own enrollment process and deadlines. Don’t assume your child is automatically enrolled based on your address. Contact your district office directly as soon as possible, especially if you’re moving mid-year, as class availability can be limited.

Private and charter school options are also plentiful across San Jose. Research waiting lists early, as popular schools often fill up well in advance.

Safety and Emergency Preparedness

San Jose sits in earthquake country, which means emergency preparedness isn’t optional, it’s responsible living. Within your first month, do the following:

  • Assemble a 72-hour emergency kit with water, food, flashlights, first aid supplies, and medications
  • Know your nearest emergency shelter location
  • Sign up for SCC Alert, Santa Clara County’s emergency notification system, at sccgov.org
  • Secure heavy furniture and bookshelves to walls to reduce earthquake hazard

If you want a thorough breakdown of safety by neighborhood, our comprehensive safety guide for San Jose residents and newcomers covers everything you need to know before and after your move.

The movers on the day of the move were great. Helped pack some items. Loaded everything. Friendly and efficient. Today the truck arrived at our new home and this crew was equally outstanding. Efficient and friendly. And everything arrived in great condition

Matthew Vukovic was exceptionally helpful and responsive. Matthew and the rest of the California team helped make my international move easier to coordinate and less stressful. They were always happy to help with questions about the process and paperwork, making me feel very confident. When I had some difficulties with the European partner, they immediately responded and made my delivery happen on time. I highly recommend them. Make sure to keep them copied when communicating with the European partners.

I highly recommend Allied/NOR-CAL moving company. Everyone I interacted with from beginning to end was professional and extremely friendly. I moved from California to Florida and the truck arrived at my new home in 10 days which was much quicker than I anticipated. Nothing was damaged in the move either and the guys who unloaded the truck did a fantastic job. And the few items that they did pack for me was packed nicely and handled with care and they wrapped and protected all my furniture really well. I can’t find one negative thing to say about my experience using this company. Definitely a 5 star experience. Thank you!!!
