The bedroom is one of the easier rooms to pack compared to the kitchen or home office, but it still requires a plan. Between the mattress, bed frame, clothing, dressers, nightstands, mirrors, and the inevitable collection of items that have accumulated under the bed and in closet corners, a bedroom can fill more boxes than you expect. Here is how to pack it efficiently and protect everything along the way. For the full approach to packing your entire home, our packing resources cover every room in detail.
Start With Decluttering
Before you pack a single box, go through everything in the bedroom with a clear eye. Clothing you have not worn in a year, books stacked on the nightstand you will never reread, the contents of that drawer that somehow accumulates everything — all of this is an opportunity to reduce your load before you move it. Every item you do not pack is an item you do not pay to move and do not have to unpack at the other end.
Be particularly thorough with your wardrobe and closet. Most people move a significant amount of clothing they never wear. Donate generously before your move date.
How to Pack Clothing
Clothing is bulky but forgiving to pack. For everyday items, fold neatly and pack into medium boxes or suitcases. Packing clothes into suitcases and bags you already own saves on boxes and makes good use of containers you are moving anyway.
For hanging clothes, wardrobe boxes are the most practical solution. A wardrobe box has a hanging bar inside that lets you transfer clothes directly from the closet rod without folding or wrinkling them. They are particularly worth it for suits, dresses, and formal wear that would be difficult to iron after moving. Ask your San Jose movers whether wardrobe boxes are available as part of your move.
For shoes, wrap individual pairs in packing paper and pack them in their original boxes if you have kept them, or in a dedicated shoe box. Avoid packing shoes loose with clothing as they can damage fabric and transfer dirt.
How to Pack a Dresser
Dressers are one of the most common sources of moving inefficiency. Most people empty them completely, pack the contents into boxes, and then have the movers carry both the empty dresser and multiple boxes of folded clothes. A more efficient approach is to leave lightweight clothing in the drawers, remove the drawers from the dresser, and transport them with the clothes still inside. Wrap each drawer in stretch wrap to keep the contents from shifting and protect the drawer face from scratches. This saves boxes, saves packing time, and reduces the number of items to unpack at the other end.
Do not leave heavy items like books, belts with heavy buckles, or jewelry boxes in the drawers during transport, as they add too much weight and risk damaging the drawer.
How to Pack a Mattress
A mattress should never go into a moving truck unwrapped. Mattress bags are inexpensive and protect against dirt, moisture, and tears during transit. Slide the mattress into the bag before the movers arrive so it is ready to load.
Most mattresses should be transported flat or on their side depending on the type. Memory foam mattresses can be transported on their side for short periods but should be laid flat as soon as possible to avoid permanent distortion. Ask your movers how they recommend transporting your specific mattress type.
If you are moving a box spring, wrap it in moving blankets or a mattress bag as well. Bed frames should be fully disassembled, with all hardware placed in a labeled zip-lock bag taped to one of the frame pieces so nothing gets separated.
How to Pack Mirrors and Wall Art
Mirrors are among the most fragile items in any bedroom. For smaller mirrors, wrap in clean packing paper first, then add a layer of bubble wrap and secure with tape. For larger floor mirrors or wall-mounted mirrors, use mirror boxes, which are flat boxes designed specifically for this purpose. Place a piece of cardboard directly on the mirror surface before sliding it into the box for an extra layer of protection. Always transport mirrors upright, never flat.
For framed wall art and photographs, the approach is the same. Our guide on how to pack pictures and mirrors has a complete walkthrough for artwork of every size.
How to Pack Nightstands and Lamps
Remove everything from nightstand drawers and pack the contents separately. Like dressers, lightweight items can stay in the drawer if you remove and wrap the drawer individually. For glass-topped nightstands, remove the glass, wrap it in moving blankets, and transport it separately from the base.
Lamps should be disassembled before packing. Remove the bulb, wrap it in paper, and pack it separately. Remove the shade and pack it in a box with paper padding on all sides. Wrap the base in bubble wrap or moving blankets and pack it in a box that fits snugly.
The Right Order to Pack a Bedroom
Pack items you rarely use first: out-of-season clothing, extra bedding, decorative items, and books. In the final days before your move, pack your everyday clothing, leaving out only what you need for moving day and the night before. The mattress and bed frame go last, ideally moved the morning of the move after you have slept in the bed one final night.
Label every box clearly with the room and a brief description of the contents. Mark any boxes containing mirrors or fragile items on multiple sides so movers handle them with appropriate care.
